Herman Wouk’s The Caine Mutiny is about a ship’s crew under pressure, where authority, competence, and trust matter more than the manual. The desktop’s operations team is similar. The hardware is complex, the environment is hostile, and the customers are distant. Someone has to be in charge when things go wrong.

2. The operations company

The desktop’s operator might be the same entity as the integrator, or it might be a separate company that specializes in spacecraft operations. The operator is responsible for keeping the platform alive, safe, and productive. It manages ground stations, flight software, anomaly response, and customer tasking.

For the first desktop, the operator is likely the integrator. As the network grows, operations may become a distinct business.

3. Flight operations team

A lean flight operations team covers orbit dynamics, power and thermal management, attitude control, communications scheduling, and fault response. For a single desktop, this might be five to ten people. For a network, the team scales sub-linearly if automation is good.

The team is distributed, on-call, and trained to handle both routine sequences and off-nominal events.

4. Payload operations team

Customer payloads need operators who understand the payloads and can translate customer requests into executable tasking. This team sits between customers and the flight operations team. They verify that requested operations are safe, schedule them, and monitor execution.

As customers mature, some payload operations can be delegated to customer-operated interfaces with automated safety checks.

5. Ground segment providers

The operator does not need to own every ground station. Commercial ground-network providers can handle routine passes. The operator owns the mission control software and the high-priority command paths, but routine data downlink can be outsourced.

This reduces capital expenditure and makes global coverage easier.

6. Maintenance and logistics

At scale, the desktop network needs logistics: spare modules, replacement attachments, propellant, feedstock, and visiting vehicles. A logistics provider — perhaps the same company that operates keeper tugs — moves these between ground and orbit and between desktops.

Operations becomes a supply chain, not just a control room.
