1. The long walk home
Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is often remembered for the journey to Mordor, but the last chapters are about the return. The Shire has to be saved after the ring is destroyed. The desktop arc feels like that. The objective was always the desktop, but the path went through keeper platforms, demo missions, captured rocks, and a great deal of arithmetic. This entry is the walk back through what we learned.
Entries 176 through 196 form a continuous arc: from the first platform’s success criteria, through the second platform’s design and business case, to the desktop’s definition, budgets, funding, revenue, risks, and scale. This entry extracts the lessons.
2. Lesson one: the desktop is not the first thing you build
This sounds obvious, but it is easy to forget. A 10 kW orbital workstation with standardized attachments cannot be justified as a first step. The first step is something smaller that proves the pieces: the keeper platform. The desktop is the destination, but the platform is the path.
3. Lesson two: interfaces matter more than any single attachment
The value of the desktop is not that it carries a great camera or a great computer. The value is that it can carry many things, swap them, and let customers bring their own. The standardized interface is the real product. Everything else is an instance of it.
4. Lesson three: the business case is a portfolio
No single revenue stream pays for the desktop. Earth observation, compute, storage, manufacturing, servicing, and hosted payloads each contribute. The desktop survives because it has multiple ways to earn money, not because it bets everything on one.
5. Lesson four: customers buy outcomes, not orbit
Customers pay for faster decisions, off-planet jurisdiction, schedule insurance, asset life extension, and risk reduction. They do not care about the desktop’s orbital mechanics. The engineering has to serve those outcomes.
6. Lesson five: scale is the real stop line
The desktop objective is achieved not when one desktop flies, but when orbital workstations become routine infrastructure. One desktop is a demo. Three is a network. Five is an industry. The stop line is reached when the desktop is no longer special.
