1. The encyclopedist’s budget

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation opens with a plan so large that its cost is measured in centuries and star systems. The desktop is smaller, but it still needs a budget that someone can read and decide whether to fund. This entry tries to produce that number.

Entry 191 described the operations model. This entry estimates the total cost of the first desktop.

2. Hardware: bus and attachments

The desktop bus — structure, power, thermal, avionics, communications, propulsion — is likely the largest single cost. For a 10 kW-class platform with deployable arrays, large radiators, and multiple attachment bays, estimate $30–50M for the first unit.

Initial attachments add cost: compute cluster ($2–5M), communications terminals ($3–8M), sensor suite ($5–15M depending on capability), manufacturing workshop ($5–12M), and keeper tug ($10–20M). Not all attach at once. A credible first desktop might launch with three attachments totaling $10–25M.

3. Launch

A desktop sized for 10 kW and multiple attachments is too large for a rideshare. It needs a dedicated Falcon 9 or equivalent launch, or perhaps assembly from two or three launches. Estimate $50–70M for launch, depending on mass and whether multiple launches are needed.

If the desktop is assembled from multiple modules launched separately, launch cost might be spread over time but the integration complexity increases.

4. Ground systems and operations

Ground systems include mission control software, ground stations or network subscriptions, security infrastructure, and customer interfaces. First-year setup: $5–10M. Annual operations: $8–15M, including the lean team described in entry 191.

5. Contingency and reserves

A project of this scale needs reserves. Add 25–30% contingency for development overruns, anomalies, and schedule slip. This is not pessimism. It is the difference between a project that survives a problem and one that does not.

6. Total first-desktop cost

Summing the midpoints: bus $40M, first attachments $18M, launch $60M, ground setup $8M, and first-year operations $12M gives roughly $138M before contingency. With 25% contingency, the total is roughly $170M.

That is a lot. It is also comparable to a single commercial communications satellite or a small space station module. The desktop is not a cheap experiment. It is a capital project.
