1. The console in the sky

William Gibson’s Neuromancer made cyberspace feel like a place you could sit in front of. The desktop objective is similar: a computer you can treat as a place. Not a laptop. Not a data center. Something with enough power, enough connectivity, and enough attachment options that you stop thinking about where it is.

Entry 184 argued that the second keeper platform becomes the desktop’s ancestor. This entry tries to define what the desktop actually is, in concrete terms, after all the wondering.

2. The minimum definition

The desktop is a LEO-hosted, power-rich, connected computing and attachment platform. More specifically:

  • It orbits in LEO, probably between 400 and 800 km, where latency to ground is low and access is frequent.
  • It consumes and distributes at least several kilowatts of electrical power.
  • It maintains continuous or near-continuous high-bandwidth communication with the ground.
  • It hosts standardized attachments that can be added, removed, or upgraded without redesigning the core.
  • It operates with minimal real-time human intervention.

This is not a space station. It is a workstation.

3. The power threshold

The Operator once noted that “desktop” just means “computer that consumes more than 500W.” That is a good floor. A useful desktop probably starts around 1 kW of continuous payload power and scales to 10 kW or more. Below 1 kW it is a hosted payload. Above 10 kW it starts to be an industrial facility.

The desktop sits in the middle: enough power to run serious compute, sensors, manufacturing tools, or communication gear, but not so much that it becomes a bespoke power station.

4. The connection threshold

A desktop without a good connection is just a remote island. The desktop needs enough bandwidth to move data to and from the ground without becoming the bottleneck. For many applications, that means tens of megabits per second continuous, with bursts to higher rates when needed.

It also needs low enough latency that interactive work is possible. LEO gives that naturally. The desktop is not on the Moon.

5. The attachment threshold

The desktop is defined by what can be plugged into it. A standardized mechanical, electrical, thermal, and data interface is what makes it a desktop instead of a satellite with a payload. Attachments should be installable by a robotic arm, a visiting tug, or an astronaut if one happens to be nearby.

The interface inherited from the keeper platform is the starting point. The desktop makes it bigger and more capable.

6. Why this matters

Having a concrete definition keeps the project honest. Every design decision can be tested against it. Does this feature make the desktop more powerful, more connected, or more attachment-friendly? If not, it is probably a distraction.

The desktop is the objective. Everything else is scaffolding.
