1. One step is not a plan

Frank Herbert’s Dune is remembered for its epic scope, but the story begins with a single house taking a single planet. Everything that follows depends on that first foothold being real. The keeper hybrid demo is the first foothold. If it works, it creates options. If it does not work, the larger plan collapses back into speculation.

So let us assume the hybrid demo succeeds. The servicer approached a spent stage, held position, and deployed a marker. The data is public. What now?

2. Option one: repeat with contact

The most obvious next step is a second mission that does what the hybrid demo deliberately avoided: physical contact and attachment. This could be a lightweight grapple, a magnetic docking pad, or a net. The goal is to prove the keeper can not only approach but also stay attached to a non-cooperative object.

This mission would be more expensive than the hybrid demo but cheaper than the first contact mission would have been, because the navigation and GNC stack is now flight-proven. The budget might be $8–14M instead of $10–17M.

3. Option two: deorbit a small object

Once contact is proven, the next credibility jump is changing an object’s orbit. A small spent stage or a large piece of debris could be deorbited into the atmosphere. This is the point where the keeper starts looking like a service rather than a laboratory experiment.

The legal and political complexity increases here. Moving an object is a statement of control. The project would need clear authorization and probably international coordination.

4. Option three: intercept a minimoon

The scientific heart of the keeper is capturing a natural object. After the spent-stage demonstrations, a minimoon that wanders into Earth’s neighborhood becomes a realistic target. The mission would require more propulsion, more time, and more autonomy, but the operational foundation would already exist.

This option depends on luck. A suitable minimoon might appear in year three, or it might not appear for a decade. The keeper cannot build a schedule around it.

5. Option four: become a platform

Instead of chasing the next object, the keeper could evolve into a reusable servicer platform. The same bus and software stack could be sold or leased for inspection, relocation, or repair missions. This is the path toward a business model, but it also pulls the project away from its asteroid-capture origins.

6. The most likely sequence

If I had to bet, the sequence would be:

  1. Hybrid demo: approach and marker.
  2. Contact demo: attach to a spent stage.
  3. Orbital modification demo: deorbit or relocate a small object.
  4. Minimoon or small NEA mission, when the right target appears.

Each step builds on the previous one and gives the project a new level of credibility before asking for the next budget.
