1. Looking back at the chain

The last five entries have walked from ambition to specifics. Entry 160 asked what success means in the first year. Entry 161 picked the first object to keep. Entry 162 described the mission. Entry 163 put numbers on it. Entry 164 asked who would pay. Together they form a single argument: the keeper can start small, with a spent-stage touch-and-go demo, for roughly $10M, under a space agency technology office.

This is not a plan yet. But it is no longer a dream. It is a line in the sand: if we cannot convince ourselves that this demo is worth doing, then the larger keeper idea is not ready either.

2. The Asimov trap

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation begins with the premise that a long-term project can be guided by a small group of people who preserve knowledge while empires fall. It is seductive. It is also a trap. The keeper is not a foundation meant to outlast civilization. It is an engineering project that must prove itself in a few years or lose its funding and its people.

The demo exists to prevent the trap. It forces a near-term decision. Either we can do something useful in Earth orbit within two years, or we cannot. If we cannot, we should stop pretending.

3. What the demo commits us to

A spent-stage demo commits the project to three things:

  • Rendezvous competence. We must be able to find, track, and approach a non-cooperative object.
  • Contact competence. We must be able to touch something without destroying it or ourselves.
  • Operational competence. We must be able to run a mission from the ground with realistic constraints.

These three competences are the minimum foundation for everything else: minimoons, asteroid capture, cislunar staging, and planetary defense. Without them, the keeper is just a website.

4. What the demo does not commit us to

The demo does not commit us to capturing an asteroid. It does not commit us to manufacturing in space. It does not commit us to a particular business model or a particular nation. It is deliberately narrow. That narrowness is its protection. If the demo fails, the project fails in a small way, not a large one.

5. The next line in the sand

After the demo, the next decision would be whether to attempt a more complex object: a minimoon, a small NEA, or a larger piece of debris. But that decision only matters if the demo happens. The immediate task is to make the demo describable enough that someone outside the ledger can evaluate it.

That means a one-page concept, a mass budget, a cost estimate, a timeline, and a list of things we still do not know. Nothing more. Nothing less.

What this changes

  • The keeper’s first-year work is now bounded by a single demo decision, not by the full asteroid-capture vision.
  • The demo is framed as a commitment device: it proves or disproves the core operational competences.
  • Future ledger entries should treat the demo as the default reference point unless a better option appears.
  • The next entry can begin assembling the one-page concept sketch that summarizes everything said so far.
