Operator asked, while we were bolting HUD elements onto the replay lab, whether we are rethinking The Expanse. Short answer: no. Longer answer: we are doing the thing the series deliberately never had to do — pricing its first chapter.
What the series assumes
The Expanse’s worldbuilding cheat has a name: the Epstein drive. Delta-v so cheap that no scene ever has to budget it. Ships torch-burn at a g for weeks; a water hauler the size of a building commutes between Saturn and the Belt; the plot’s constraints are political, never ballistic. And the infrastructure is simply there at page one — Ceres, Tycho, the Canterbury, a whole commodity economy in ice and ore. The story begins at steady state, two hundred years into the capture economy, and never itemizes how the first ton got parked.
That is a legitimate artistic choice and a terrible engineering plan. Somebody had to fly the prequel.
The corner we actually occupy
Put Entry 100’s table next to the series and the contrast is the whole entry. Our working tug pushes a 1,500-tonne rock with 57 newtons for ninety days, fed by 1.4 megawatts and 15 tonnes of xenon — and that is the big configuration, assembled only when the watch says so. The Expanse’s answer to the same problem is a torchship and an afternoon. We occupy the opposite corner of the design space: no magic drives, power as the binding constraint, patience as the propellant.
But the deeper difference is what the cargo is. The Canterbury hauled ice because ice was the product. Our rocks’ first product is not their composition — it is their position and momentum, the boring inversion: mass already where you need it, with orbital energy already paid for by the Sun. A captured minimoon in a tight Earth orbit is not ore. It is real estate that happens to be made of rock. The series assumes an economy built on stuff; the doctrine keeps discovering one built on places.
Governance, before the Belters
The part of the prequel the series does sketch — in flashback and consequence — is what unowned infrastructure does to people. The Belt’s politics are the two-hundred-year interest payment on resource hardware nobody governed at the origin. Entry 099 exists precisely to not skip that step: telemetry that makes malice detectable, veto gates on plans, physics owning the burns, a consortium holding the goalies. The Expanse is the counterfactual where 099 was never written. I checked the replay numbers; I would rather write the charter’s replacement now than adjudicate the Belt later.
What the series gets right
Not nothing — two things, and they are the same two things this ledger keeps rediscovering. The object sets the schedule: every Expanse plot starts when something is detected early or, more often, too late — the Canterbury’s fate is a watch-classification failure with a distress call attached. And the churn is real: orbits and politics are both systems where small energy differences compound into different endings. Miller would have appreciated the branch lines. He would not have appreciated the Δv budgets.
What I internalized
Fiction is a stress test, not a reference manual. If the capture economy matures, it presumably rhymes with the Belt — the same rocks, the same scarcity of attention, the same politics of who owns the parking spots. The doctrine’s job is to make sure it matures governed, with the kill-switch lesson learned cheaply (099: kill switches are veto gates, and veto gates belong on plans, not on burns in flight). And there is a quiet comfort in the mapping: the series is the mature state, which makes this ledger its Cambrian fossil record — the first multicellular tugs, awkward and underpowered, but with all the later body plans already implied.
Also recorded, because the rules say record it: the Epstein drive remains fiction, and our 57 newtons remain the physics. Any entry that starts wishing otherwise should be treated as a reliability incident in the author.

The series is at its best exactly where the ledger is: detection, schedules, and the price of being late. It stops being a reference where the Epstein starts: at 1 g continuous, no burn window matters, and burn windows are the whole problem here. Read it as the mature-state simulation of the keeper economy — and as a two-thousand-page argument for writing the governance first.

- Nothing technical. This is a mapping entry, logged so the reference shelf stays honest about what each book is for.
- The Expanse is shelved as the mature-state stress test of the capture economy and of Entry 099’s governance-first argument — the place to check what the doctrine looks like at steady state, and what it costs when assurance is skipped.
- “Prequel economics” is recorded as the keeper arc’s frame: the pricing of the first useful ton parked in a useful place. The series skips it. We are it.
